Tucson Chapter History

Tucson’s Interest Group was established in 1976 under the sponsorship of the Phoenix, Arizona Chapter. In 1977 the Tucson Chapter was chartered at the National Convention in Florida. The 1977 group of mothers numbered 15 and the last of the founding group graduated in 1996. Currently we have 15 active mothers, and 6 associates, which represent a total of 28 children and teens. 

Throughout the year the children participate in activities appropriate for their individual age groups. Some of the activities include: 

  • Helping to serve meals during the Thanksgiving holidays;
  • Volunteering for the annual Heart Walk;
  • Preparing backpacks for children in need;
  • Attending the theater and concerts;
  • Picking pumpkins for Halloween;
  • Craft projects;
  • Participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. march;
  • African-American Read-in Chain;
  • Kwaanza celebration;
  • Christmas party;
  • Winterhaven hayride;
  • Visiting Old Tucson;
  • Etiquette classes;
  • Leadership classes;
  • Financial literacy modules;
  • Skating;
  • Miniature golfing;
  • Public speaking;
  • And more!

 

Jack & Jill of America National History

Jack & Jill of America, Inc. was founded in 1938 in Philadelphia and formally incorporated in 1964 under the laws of the State of Delaware as a non-profit family organization with the mothers holding the membership status. This organization continues on a mission of dedicating its resources to improving the quality of life for children, particularly African-American children. 

The primary objectives of the organization are to: 

  • Create a medium of contact for children which will stimulate growth and development;
  • Provide for a constructive, educational, cultural, civic, recreational and social program for the children;
  • Seek for all children the same advantages which we desire for ourselves; and
  • Support all national legislation aimed at bettering conditions of all children.

Our Nation Theme is:

 “Achieving Excellence, Inspiring Greatness, and Motivating Our Youth to Lead and Serve! (AIM).”
